Do you need to find resources related to mathematics? MathSciNet is your best source when searching the math realm. The database contains bibliographic information, abstracts, and reviews from across a wide array of publications in the field of mathematics. This database is frequently updated, with over 100,000 new resources added every year.

In terms of authority, recent literature is reviewed by experts and professional mathematicians. 80,000 reviews are added every year. Plus there are over 550 journals within the MathSciNet collection.

MathSciNet Search Results

Search results are easy to navigate and full text is available for a variety of results. Items not available in full text can be found via the Full Text @ Drake option as well as interlibrary loan and the Get It Now option.

So the next time you’re doing research for anything related to mathematics, give MathSciNet a try.

Starting an experiment can be a confusing and frustrating task because sometimes we don’t know how to start it or how to build the steps. Thankfully JoVE Biology can help you replicate and build experiments with visual aids. JoVE Biology is an online, peer-reviewed resource focusing on general biological research presented using videos.

Along with over 1,500 peer-reviewed videos, JoVE Biology also provides you with a PDF of experimental techniques, references, and lists of materials used in the experiment. A bonus is that you can access this material using MEDLINE.

In terms of content, JoVE Biology provides you with general biology research methodologies, including cell, molecular, and organismal biology. It includes, but is not limited to, techniques in physical biology, cellular biochemistry, genetics, physiology, systems biology and a combination of eukaryotic and prokaryotic model systems.

In addition to the biology resources, Cowles Library also provides you with access to JoVE Neuroscience. You can differentiate between them by looking for a blue-colored “B” or a green-colored “N” in the upper-right corner of the page. You can use the search tools on the left side of the screen to search one at a time or both at once.

Cowles Library has a subscription to CQ Press Voting and Elections Collection.  This database integrates a wealth of data, analyses, and historical material to provide a powerful research and reference tool on voters, political parties, campaigns and elections, historical and modern races for Congress, the presidency, and governorships.  It also includes the ability to generate customized data about candidates, voter turnout, party control, and more!

This research and reference website is organized into six categories:

• Presidential Elections includes explanations of the presidential electoral process, analyses and data for historical and modern presidential elections, modern voting behavior, key events and issues, and biographies.
• Congressional Elections provides explanations of the congressional electoral process, including reapportionment and redistricting; data for historical and modern congressional elections; analyses of modern congressional elections; modern voting behavior; modern district profiles; key events and issues; and biographies.
• Gubernatorial Elections presents explanations of the gubernatorial electoral process and data for historical and modern gubernatorial elections.
• Campaigns and Elections explores the American system of voting and elections, electoral process and reform, media, interest groups, and the impact of money.
• Political Parties covers the party system in America, including party strength and control, and profiles Democratic, Republican, and third parties.
• Voters and Demographics covers expansion of voting rights, voter turnout, voting behavior, modern county census data, and modern district profiles.

We here at Cowles Library encourage our users to check out the “new” version of Refworks. This bibliographic citation manager is already in use by many at Drake, so this new version offers a seamless transition and importing of your existing citations. There is an extensive YouTube site if you want to watch some short videos to understand the advantages of the new version.

Refworks allows users to create, import and update bibliographic information in all required and standard academic styles in use at Drake. Create a personal account with your Drake email address on first use and use RefWorks to track citations and create bibliographies. This account remains active even after you leave Drake. More information and training can be found at http://proquest.libguides.com/newrefworks.

Ever been interested in how biology researchers actually perform their experiments?  In how you could replicate that same complicated scientific process with the help of some visual aids?  Well JoVE Biology is the answer for you.  JoVE Biology is an online peer-reviewed journal devoted to investigations of publications on general biological research in a video format. JoVE Biology contains 1,562 + peer reviewed video articles.  These articles each include videos of the experiment and it’s techniques, a written PDF article with references, and a materials list of items used to perform the experiment.  These articles are also indexed in MEDLINE.  Drake has a subscription to JoVE Biology and JoVE Neuroscience. These articles are designated by blue B and green N in the upper right corner. To search one collection at a time, use the check boxes on the lefthand side.

JoVE Biology contains all general biology research methodologies. Bibliography of Native North Americans (BNNA) is one of the Library’s key resources for researching the culture, history, and life of native North Americans. BNNA considers native North Americans to belong to one of the following broad groups:

• Aleuts, which include Eskimos or Inuit of Greenland, northern Canada, Alaska, and eastern Siberia; and
• other native peoples (i.e. “Indians”) of Alaska, Canada, the United States, and Mexico north of the northern boundary of Mesoamerica.

BNNA includes more than 188,000 citations from books, journals, essays and government documents. BNNA is not a primary source collection. For manuscripts, photographs, letters, and other primary sources related to native North Americans, Cowles Library offers Indigenous Peoples: North America.

More than 30,000 citations include direct links to full text, with thousands more available via “Check for Full Text @ Drake” links from Sabin Americana, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Early English Books Online, and others. In all, roughly half of the citations in BNNA will lead you to full text.

BNNA is an EBSCO collection, so all of the content in this collection can also be found when you search SuperSearch.

Date coverage: 1602 to the present, although most content was published after 1944.

Geographic coverage: Greenland, Canada, eastern Siberia, United States and Mexico north of the northern boundary of Mesoamerica.
