Quiet Study Seating Added

It’s the end of semester crunch time and seating — especially in our quiet study areas — is at a premium. We’ve allocated additional quiet study space (100+ seats) for the next two weeks. Here’s where!

Room 201 (the fishbowl) is dedicated to quiet study at the end of the semester. There are more than 60 seats -- all of which have great access to electrical power and a nice view of campus.

The Reading Room is always a great spot to study! We've added 10 tables and an additional 40 seats. Not all have good access to power, but many do.

Cowles Library & Scholarly Monographs: Knowledge Unlatched

February 24, 2014

Cowles Library is one of the 200 founding libraries of Knowledge Unlatched: “a collaborative initiative enabling open access books. Knowledge Unlatched is helping stakeholders to work together for a sustainable open future for specialist scholarly books. Our vision is a healthy market that includes free access for end users.”

“The current system for publishing scholarly books is not working for anyone. Monographs in the humanities and social sciences, in particular, are in crisis.

“Knowledge Unlatched is committed to changing this. We believe that by working together libraries can create a sustainable route to Open Access for scholarly books and secure long-term cost savings for their own institutions by sharing the costs of making HSS monographs available on a Creative Commons licence. Supporting Open Access through Knowledge Unlatched will not cost more than simply purchasing a more traditionally published title.”

An exciting day at the Library!

October 25, 2013

Materials are moving in to the new University Archives and Special Collections space at Cowles Library.  The new, 6,000 sq. ft. area includes a large climate-controlled storage unit for archival preservation.  Special Collections materials — which include artifacts from Drake’s history and many rare and unique documents and items — have been scattered throughout the Library in file cabinets, boxes and “piles o’ stuff.”  The new area will also hold the papers of Senator Tom Harkin and be the site of a mass digitization project for the papers of Iowa Governor Robert Ray.   Not everything will move today, but it’s an important milestone for the Library and Drake University. Here’s a few pictures:
